Philosophy

Making gardening sustainable and fun for everybody

Danny Clarke Philosophy for Sustainable urban spaces - Michelle Broomfield

Danny runs his own landscape company which specialises in gorgeous gardens for private clients. He is also a well known television presenter known for designing garden makeovers on a budget which bring joy to deserving people and help educate us all on biodiversity and climate change.

Danny is a city boy and especially interested in how we can fill our built environments with gardens. Danny is passionate about using his media voice to show us how our urban green spaces can be used to build community spirit and bring people of all ages and cultures together. Danny wants to make gardening interesting to a younger and more diverse audience, inspiring them to have a better connection to our natural world at a younger age.

I would love to see our towns and cities filled with trees, parks and gardens
for everybody to share...

Sustainability &
Conservation

As a nation we are not educated on the small things we can do in our own streets and gardens to help combat climate change. Trees are the lungs of our planet and our communities should be filled with them. Our gardens tend to be so tidy we are killing the natural habitat for bugs, wildlife and bees. Simple changes like allowing a small part of the garden to grow wild and adding a large basin of water can help create a thriving environment for local biodiversity.

Upcycling &
Recycling

You do not need a big budget to create a great garden. Upcycling and recycling are 2 of Danny’s favourite media topics. Danny shows us how to make amazing new ideas out of discarded items. He encourages us not to throw anything away if it can be given a new purpose. Upcycling can add a lot of character to a garden and make it really personal as well as being great fun to do.

Colour & Paint

On his television makeovers Danny loves to use colour in the garden and is a huge fan of paint. Restoring parts of the garden with paint is a really great way to add personality and protect and restore parts of the garden in one go. It’s great for people on a budget too and especially appealing for young people who can express themselves quickly creating works of art at a minimum cost.

Inclusivity &
Attainability

Danny wants to make gardening fun and exciting for all people of all ages. There are many people in the U.K. who do not have access to a garden and Danny wants to help solve that. He believes gardening should be taught at school from a young age and more community gardening schemes should be available in local areas. Danny wants to show us that gardening is a really ‘cool’ thing to do and encourage more people to enjoy their outdoor spaces.

Art & Culture

For Danny gardening is not only about soil and plants. Our outdoor spaces are a great opportunity to express our own creativity. We can customise our gardens to suit our personalities and fill them with art, sculpture and the plants we love most. Our gardens should be an oasis to reflect, recharge, entertain and have fun. We can add in cultural references, design fabulous landscapes and create areas in the garden for different moments in our day.

Food & Nutrition

There are so many reasons we need to take more notice of the food we eat. Switching to home grown organic is a great idea to avoid pesticides and make sure we are getting full nutrition from our food. Danny encourages everybody to make room for vegetables in the garden. Community gardening schemes and produce sharing are a great way for those without gardens to start learning how to grow food.
